If you smell gas or hear escaping gas

Leave the building immediately and get everyone to a safe location. Do not operate lights, appliances, phones or other electrical devices inside, and avoid anything that could cause a spark. From outside, call 911 or your gas provider’s emergency line. FortisBC gas customers can call 1-800-663-9911.

Do not try to locate or repair the leak. Do not return until the emergency responders or utility tell you it is safe. For propane, contact 911 or your propane supplier from a safe location.

If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds

Get everyone outside immediately and call 911 from a safe location. Carbon monoxide cannot be detected by smell. Follow the emergency responders’ instructions and do not re-enter until it is safe.

Do not silence an alarm and continue operating the furnace. Equipment involved in a suspected CO incident needs qualified assessment before it is used again.

If the home has no heat

Without a gas or CO warning, a no-heat problem still calls for a timely qualified assessment. Arrange a safe warm place if occupants cannot remain comfortable and safe while waiting. Do not heat the home with an oven, barbecue or outdoor fuel-burning appliance.
